This research aimed to study the range of blue colors that are acceptable on traffic signs for elderly vision. The subjects were 30 people who have no visual impairment and have normal or corrected to normal visual acuity. The researcher defined 2 groups of sample: 1) the “Young” aged between 18 to 35 years old, and 2) the “Simulated Elderly” wearing the cataract in experiencing goggles. The test patch used in this experiment consisted of 18 mandatory road signs with 52 background colors, which came from the CIE 1931 xy chromaticity diagram. The luminance of each background color was determined by the Brightness Matching with the reference of blue (Yxy = 16.26, 0.141, 0.063). The experiment was divided into two parts: the experiment of the acceptability blue color and the experiment of color category naming. For the first experiment, the purpose was to find the background color that was accepted as blue on the traffic sign under the 0 lux illuminance. The subjects were asked whether the visible color on the display was blue on the traffic sign or not. For the experiment of color category naming, the subjects were asked to categorize the colors on the display from the following 11 basic color terms: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, gray, black, and white. The results showed that the background colors recognized and categorized as blue on the traffic signs by “Simulated Elderly” and “Young” were similar, 14 colors and 15 colors, respectively. This means that the elderly do not have problems seeing the blue background color on the traffic signs as questioned by the researcher. Some of the background colors recognized and categorized as blue on the traffic signs by the “Simulated Elderly” and “Young” are beyond Thai Industrial Standards (TIS) 635-2554. This shows that, if there is a change in the color of the traffic signs beyond the TIS635-2554, but still remain within the acceptable background color range and was categorized as blue on the traffic signs by the “Simulated Elderly” and “Young”, we will still see the colors of the traffic signs as blue. In addition, all of the background colors accepted and categorized as blue on the traffic signs by the “Simulated Elderly” and “Young” can be used as the background colors on the traffic signs.
